UI / UX Design, Web Design

This talk by Brad Frost was held at beyond tellerrand 2013, May 27 – 29, in Düsseldorf where he announced his brand new Pattern Lab (patternlab.bradfrostweb.com). "We’re not designing pages anymore. We’re designing systems of components." As with most things Stephen Hay says, he's right. Over the last few years, the Web community has been creating robust design systems that encourage consistency, facilitate collaboration and establish future-friendly foundations. This session will discuss the mental shift required to design systematically, and will cover how to go about implementing your very own design system.

UI / UX Design, Web Design

Who is Jeffrey Zeldman? The "Miles Davis of web design"? "Godfather of the web"? Or simply "your friend on the Internet"? For people who make websites, Zeldman is all of these and more. He's been a guiding voice in web design since the earliest days of the Internet, leading the charge in the fight for web standards. He's an educator whose businesses—A List Apart, An Event Apart, and A Book Apart—are extensions of his basic instinct to share his best ideas. He's also a community leader that other designers look to for inspiration. This film is an intimate portrait of a man who has helped shape the web but isn't recognized by most of the people who use it everyday. Learn how he evolved his influential mailing list, how he convinced Netscape and Internet Explorer to support HTML and CSS, and what he's doing to pass the torch to the next generation.

Likening the experience to “building an airplane in flight,” Scott talks about the creative’s need for triage, the crucial role of incremental design improvements, and the importance of getting back to the hand and keeping things simple.

Web Design

Border-radius might seem superficially simple, but it can be very powerful. However, its powers are reserved only for those who know how to unleash them. Under its superficial simplicity it hides some of the most complex algorithms in CSS. Lea Verou talks about learning how to master these complexities at the Future of Web Design, London.

Web Design

Seemingly non-obvious details can often separate good web design from great web design. You might not appreciate the quality of a well-designed website until you start using it, looking under the hood, putting it through tests, etc. Dan will share some of these details that matter most. By encouraging “progressive enrichment” to utilize advanced CSS and CSS3 properties that work in browsers today, to reevaluating past methods and best practices. This talk will show how craftsmanship can be applied to flexible, bulletproof, highly efficient and adaptable interfaces that make up a solid user experience.
